About Me: My name is Alyssa Leong, I am 22 years old and currently living in Kuala Lumpur. I graduated from the University of Nottingham Malaysia with first class honours in Biomedical Science. I am passionate in academia and always aim to achieve the best I could through hard work and perseverance. As a solution-oriented person, I work meticulously to find the root cause of a problem. My three years of my bachelors is marked by continuous hard work and constant self-improvement.   Proper academia was always crucial to me, as I see education to be the pathway to success and stability in life. During my secondary education years, I attended Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Sentosa, where I obtained 6As in my SPM. I then continued my academic journey in Methodist College Kuala Lumpur and earned 1A and 3Bs in my GCE Cambridge A Levels. My belief in academic studies is only with clear understanding, there could be high-achieving standards. Working smart and realistic goal-setting is essential to achieving the best.   I have experience in working with culturally diverse teams, due to my time as a volunteer in youth organisation AIESEC’s volunteer programme, Global Volunteer. In the summer break of my first year, I spent 6 weeks in Taiwan with fellow students of diverse nationalities, working as a team in organising an English and cultural camp for Taiwanese children aged 6 to 15. From this experience, I have obtained an appreciation of clear communication and understanding between team players, as well as techniques in handling young children, maintaining their attention and providing motivation in team spirit growth.   As an adventurous introvert, I continuously strive to step out of my own comfort zone. In my second year of university, I joined the Nottingham Dance Club with no prior experience of dance nor any sporting inclination and performed in the club’s hallmark event of the year. After a month of gruelling practice, my group performed for two days in front of an audience of hundreds. My appreciation of team synchronisation began then, with a healthy dose of respect to my fellow dancers and choreographers for the effort they’ve put in.   To hone my skills in the laboratory as needed by my science degree, I spent 3 months as an intern in Pantai Premier Pathology Sdn. Bhd., working in the hospital laboratory at Hospital Pantai Ampang. My time in these labs gave me an idea of work hierarchy in hospital labs, with admiration to the efficiency and effectiveness clear standard operating procedures can provide in a chain workflow. I have come to appreciate quick and precise laboratory techniques to aid in managing large amounts of samples. Time management and clear communication between staffs were key skills I’ve learned in the duration of my internship. Outside my academic studies and volunteering work, I enjoy enriching my general knowledge by reading books, particularly books about history and symbolism. I play the piano and also the guitar, a part of my upbringing to instil musical interest when I was little. About My Lesson: My lessons are customised to the students’ needs. Based on their previous understanding on topics, I aim to refine and improve on concepts, and provide further information necessary. My lessons are aimed to be more of an interactive discussion between me and my students, where I would provide prompts to allow them to reach the correct conclusion through their own understanding.   I plan my lessons beforehand by asking the student on where they intend to improve next and by familiarising myself with the contents of their syllabus. I then further refresh my memory on these topics to discuss with my students.   To engage my students, I make sure to use relatable examples in abstract concepts. I see that this captures their attention and also makes understanding the topic easier.   In my lessons, the students would benefit by learning how to use the tools of academia towards their own understanding, in doing so they would be independent in achieving high academic standards. Education Experience: I have had past experiences tutoring school children at the age of 10 till 12. I also have had experiences teaching special needs’ children at a common centre as a volunteer.
