About Me: Abdul Ghani Md Rafek obtained his BSc (Hons) in Applied Geology from University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 1978. With a scholarship of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) he continued his postgraduate studies at the Ruhr University, Bochum in Germany, achieving a Dr.rer.nat. (PhD). Upon returning to Malaysia in 1984, he joined the Geology Department of the National University of Malaysia (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, UKM) as a lecturer. He worked there until October 2014, becoming an Associate Professor in 1994 and a Professor of Engineering Geology (Geomechanics) in 2007. Ghani joined Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, UTP in December 2014 as a professor at the Department of Petroleum Geosciences and was there until November 2018. His main research activity focusses on geological discontinuity quantification and characterization for geomechanics and its application in rock slope stability, tunnel stability and petroleum geology. He has considerable experience in rock slope stability analysis, tunnel stability analysis, application of geophysics for rock mass characterization, engineering geology, engineering geophysics, environmental geology and hydrogeology. Through UKM’s consultancy office, UKM Pakarunding, as a registered subject specialist with the Department of Environment, he has been involved in numerous infrastructure and environmental assessment projects. As a registered Professional Geologist with the Board of Geologists, he is currently active as an independent subject matter expert in engineering geology, rock mechanics, hydrogeology and engineering geophysics.
